Nikon D7000: A Superb Mid-Range DSLR Camera

Nikon promised a lot with this camera. It delivers even more. This new camera was released in September 2010 and has already attracted a strong following by serious amateur enthusiasts as a fine mid-range digital SLR camera. Usually competitively positioned between the professional D300S (aimed at professional) and the D90 (aimed at prosumers), the Nikon D7000 is widely considered to represent good value for money.

Nikon positions its digital cameras into three segments. Its two-digit models are aimed at so-called prosumers being a mix of professionals and savvy amateur users. Its three-digit models are aimed at squarely at professionals. The more recent four-digit series is focused on consumers or amateur hobbyists. Arguably, the Nikon D7000 compares well with some of the two-digit cameras.

The D7000 DSLR camera comes with a massive 16.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor plus the EXPEED 2 proprietary image processing. This combination produces images with smoothly transitioned tones and richly dense resolution.

The camera body is tough, durable and solid. It is cased in an all-metal chassis plus a magnesium-alloy rear and top covers. The case is safely sealed against weather and dust.

The Nikon D7000 is also its first digital SLR model to incorporate 1080p high definition (HD) video, with stereo sound and full-time autofocus, as well as full manual control. The camera can shoot breathtaking 20-minute movies. There is an in-built jack for an external microphone.

The batteries are lithium-ion. It camera shoots about 1,050 images on one battery charge. The unit uses a new battery grip that supports AA batteries. A battery grip is a camera accessory designed as container or chamber that holds multiple batteries that extend the operation of the camera. When fitted to the camera body, a battery grip adds a handling point that conveniently also has a range of controls (such as a shutter release), increasing overall ease of use. A battery grip usually attaches to the camera body through its own battery compartment.

The Nikon D7000 digital SLR has an impressive ISO 100-6,400. This sensitivity range is expandable to 25,600 allowing fine shots in near darkness.
