SLR The Camera Of Today
Hardly anyone still uses a camera with film. Some of you are already scratching your head asking, “What is film?”If you don’t own a point and shoot digital camera you are probably using the one on your smart phone. Even ten years ago digital cameras were bulky and produced grainy pictures with only 1 or 2 megapixel definition. (a megapixel is 1000 dots) . They were relatively expense at $300 to $700 and could only hold about 25 to 100 pictures; depending upon the quality or size image you chose. As the possible quality and quantity of pictures has increased so has the price decreased. Recently I purchased a Kodak 13 meg camera, with a 16 gig memory card for about $70 (plus about $35 for the memory card) and it’s also waterproof!
Moreover, what is true for your basic point and shoot camera is doubly true for the more sophisticated, more professional, SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras. What used to cost thousands can now be had for $500 to $800. In the good old days I had a Pentax K1000 SLR with three lens. Put them in a camera case with 10 or twenty rolls of film etc. and I was lugging 20 to 30 lbs wherever I went. Plus the only automatic thing on the camera was a light meter. I took some great pictures but I missed many more. However, those days are over. Now I’m focused and trying to decide which of the two most popular, professional quality digital cameras I should buy. Will it be the Canon EOS or the Nikon D90.
Canon and Nikon SLR camera are alike in many ways. Both are SLR cameras(single lense reflex) . In short this means they have a series of mirrors that let you look right through the lens. This means that what you see is what you get. Both the Nikon and the Canon come as a main body to which you may attach a variety of lenses. Lenses are used for telephoto, wide angle, panoramic, and close up shots to name a few. The variety is staggering!
With each of these camera you can adjust the size and quality of your photo. Using ISO and f-stop to control light and speed the SLR cameras can mimic film. Instead of buying various speeds of film you simply set your ISO and f-stop setting for the desire effect. You can aslo set the camera to do these setting for you automatically. You can also shoot in RAW format which allows you to play with the pictures creatively.y
Video is another great feature of the new digital camera. You can even edit your video. The quality available on the more expensive modles is remarkable.
One other factor driving the move from point and shoot to a more sophisticated camera is the wide variety of options now available for sharing your pictures and videos. You can post your photos on your personal web site or frame them to hang in yuour home. You can upload to Picassa, Facebook or other photo sharing site easily and quickly. You can even run your videos on your televison set!
It’s a brave new world in photography.
